Hey, I'm Shelley Chapman, EdM,

your Mindful Nutrition Coach

Here's my Story.

I founded the Mindful Nutrition School in 2014.

In addition to founder, I'm also a Kompas and Salsa dancer, a plant-based foodie, world traveler, mindfulness coach, and your guide to eating with joy, intention, and trust.

But before I became any of this, there was… chaos, confusion, despair, loss –– and a whole lot of emotional eating.

Let me back up.

Yes, I’ve got the professional creds:

I earned my Master's from Harvard in Human Development and Psychology, and my Bachelor's from Spelman College. I’ve spent 20 years teaching — from classrooms to corporate trainings to natural healing circles.

I’ve worked with Queen Afua, lectured at universities such as Harvard and Emory, served up delicious wisdom on Dr. Oz and facilitated impactful and transformational wellness workshops to clients like the US Dept of Treasury, NBC Universal, Disney Pixar, Calm and Food Network.

I’m also a Mindful Eating Coach, recipe creator, and host of The Mindful Plate on YouTube.

But credentials aside –– what truly qualifies me to guide you is I’ve been where you are.

The truth behind my transformation

Death. Divorce. Abortion. Foreclosure. Depression. Bankruptcy.

Yeah, it's a lot.

But if we’re going to work together, I want you to know that I’m not here to fix you — I’m here to guide and walk with you.

Because I’ve walked through the fire.

I used to be overweight — not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually weighed down by stories I never told.

I ate my grief.

I numbed my anger.

I silenced my pain with sugar and carbs.

Every pound I carried had a backstory. And when I finally stopped emotional eating and started feeling, I realized I had been carrying my trauma in my body.

I had a choice:

  • Keep numbing out with food...

  • Or go inward and finally heal.

On my previous journeys to lose weight, I always went outside. Trying a new diet, following someone else's advice, getting a gym membership, etc.

But that never worked long term.

So when my life hit rock bottom, I chose to go inside. . .to my inner world.

And that’s where I discovered Mindful Nutrition.

Do you know what else I found?

I found parts of me that

were silenced, hidden and still holding onto past resentments, frustrations and fears.

Divorce

As a teenager, I didn’t have the tools to cope or make sense of my emotions during my parents’ divorce. I turned to Oreos and Cheetos to quiet the sadness I couldn’t name. That was the beginning of my emotional eating.

Mindful Nutrition invited me to revisit that painful chapter—not to relive it, but to begin healing the shame, hurt, abandonment, and resentment I had buried for years.

.

Abortion

I was once in a relationship with an abusive man.  During sex, our protection slipped off –– I was unaware and he knew but didn't tell me.  From that moment, my consent was taken away and my life was changed forever. I became pregnant.

That pregnancy turned into a medically threatened miscarriage and I ultimately chose to have an abortion.  Afterwards, I experienced an 8 month depression and despair. I ate to numb the ache, survive the silence and to fill the holes in my soul.

Mindful Nutrition had me revisit that time –– not to relive it, but to begin a forgiveness journey and allow the river of sadness and loss to flow instead of damn it up with nachos.

Foreclosure

... on not 1 but 2 homes.

I bought my first rental property when I was 26 and my 1st home when I was 28. In 2012 in the fallout of the 2008 financial crisis, I lost both of them.

Losing a $300,000 investment

. . . followed by

Bankruptcy

. . .  and then . . .

My Daddy Died

. . .  all within the same week!

When it rains, it pours.

At this point, I knew that there was no amount of food that would bring my father back.

Any one of those experiences could have been reason enough to turn to emotional eating and overeating.

But by the grace of God—and through the healing practices of Mindful Nutrition—I found a path forward. . . .

I didn't run to food. I ran toward healing through feeling.

I transformed my emotional eating habits by transforming my stories.

And I can help you do the same.

By nurturing my whole self –– not just my body –– I released the emotional weight and the 60 pounds followed. I've kept it off for 13 years and counting –– not through restriction, but through reconnection and restoration.

You may not share my exact story.

But you know what it's like to carry emotional weight.

You know what it's like to try all the weight loss teas, cleanses and diets and still feel stuck.

You know what it's like to feel like your cravings are in control while you are out of control.

Your weight has its own story.

I'm here to tell you ––  that you can change, shift and heal.

Mindful Nutrition is a  journey back to self.

I share my journey with you over on The Mindful Plate, my YouTube channel where you'll find me cooking, sharing my story, dishing out mindful eating tips and showcasing the incredible, edible bounty of God's good green Earth!

If you want to take the Mindful Nutrition path, you can join us over at The Mindful Nutrition School, where I  teach my signature course, The D.E.T.O.X.™ Method and coach women like you to reconnect with your whole self ––not just your holes, starting with your relationship with food, honoring your feelings and embodying your feminine Spirit.
